Digital sovereignty is the ability for everyone to be able to perform their roles in the digital world independently, self-determinedly and securely. In infrastructure, that starts with owning your data and controlling where it lives and runs and extends to who is able to access it. But real control requires more: the ability to understand, modify, and innovate on the software itself. Technologies following the “4 Opens” development methodology, transparent providers, interoperability, and the option to self-host give users that power.

Open source projects including OpenStack, Kata Containers, StarlingX, and Zuul, supported by the OpenInfra Foundation, provide the building blocks. Rooted in global communities and neutral governance, open infrastructure brings digital sovereignty within reach.

OpenInfra in Practice

NUBO, a French interministerial cloud project, built and operated by the Ministry of Economics and Finance, has emerged as a leading example of how open-source technologies — especially OpenStack — can power sovereign, secure, and scalable digital infrastructure.

STACKIT, the cloud and colocation provider of Schwarz Group, has fully embraced the concept of digital sovereignty by leveraging OpenStack, an open-source cloud platform that ensures full control over data storage and processing while adhering to stringent legal requirements.
