OpenInfra Momentum Grows in India

The OpenInfra Foundation returned from KubeCon + CloudNativeCon India 2026 with a clear takeaway: the open infrastructure community across the region is thriving. The Foundation booth drew consistent crowds throughout the event, with conversations spanning OpenStack deployments, edge computing, digital sovereignty, and AI infrastructure. Notably, the most common question from attendees was not how to deploy the software, but how to contribute. 

That enthusiasm extended beyond the conference floor: the OpenInfra User Group India meetup drew more than 400 registrations, bringing together operators, developers, and newcomers to exchange experiences and build the relationships that sustain open source communities over time.

With Platinum Member Wind River supporting technical conversations about StarlingX at the booth, Silver Member Coredge drawing its own packed crowd nearby, and NPCI sharing its OpenStack-powered infrastructure story from the keynote stage, the event offered a vivid picture of how deeply open infrastructure has taken root across India and how much momentum this community carries heading into the rest of the year.

OpenInfra Foundation News

  • OpenInfra Foundation board member Johan Christenson wrote an article in Enterprise Times about why open source infrastructure is where sovereignty lives, and why the window to act is now.
  • Written by OpenStack TC Chair Goutham Pacha Ravi, this All Things Open article explores why open governance is the foundation of digital sovereignty, using OpenStack as a real-world example of how community-led decision making helps organizations maintain control over critical infrastructure.

OpenInfra Summit Asia

On September 8-9, OpenInfra Summit Asia | KubeCon | CloudNativeCon | PyTorch Conference China will take place in Shanghai. This flagship event unites adopters, technologists, and community members from across the region to drive innovation in open-source infrastructure, cloud-native computing, and open-source AI around common, industry-wide use cases such as next-gen AI. Over two days, the OpenInfra community will collaborate with the PyTorch and CNCF communities across dozens of open technologies, including two of the most active open source projects to exist—Kubernetes and OpenStack—to shape the future of open source software and technology as a whole.

OpenStack

  • Technical elections are just around the corner! If you’re interested in helping lead the OpenStack community either as a Project Team Lead or member of the Technical Committee, now is the time to work on drafting your candidate position statements. Self-nominations open at the beginning of August for all PTLs as well as four TC seats. Keep an eye on the election site and watch for communication from election officials on the OpenStack Discussion mailing list for further instructions as deadlines draw near.
  • Deployers and operators are encouraged to upgrade their Ironic, Mistral, Nova, Neutron, and Swift versions for several new important security fixes. As always, consult the OpenStack Security site and subscribe to the OpenStack Announcements mailing list for the latest in official OpenStack Security Advisories and Security Notes.
  • Running OpenStack? Share your feedback and deployment choices in the OpenStack User Survey. The deadline to be included in 2026 analysis is August 28, 2026.
  • At the upcoming OpenInfra Summit in Shanghai, there are several sessions covering OpenStack with topics ranging from virtualization migration to bare metal management and AI agent sandboxing. 

Kata Containers

  • The new Kata Containers 3.32.0 release is now available! The community is working hard on the Kata Containers 4.0.0 release. If you’re curious about what the new major version of the runtime is going to bring you, check out the release preview blog post!
  • At the upcoming OpenInfra Summit in Shanghai, these sessions cover various Kata Containers topics including the 4.0 release and Kata’s growing role in AI agent sandboxing. 

OpenDev Collaboratory

  • OpenDev is planning to rename Gerrit projects in the near future. Please get those requests in now if you have a need to rename a Gerrit project.

StarlingX

  • The StarlingX community has reached milestone 2 in the 13.0 release cycle. This means that the community has locked down the desired content of the release and is now working on finishing the implementation work and testing activities before the release later this year.

Zuul

  • Zuul and its ability to address problems posed by AI-driven software development were the subject of our last OpenInfra Live episode. Check out the recording or the blog post to learn all about how Zuul fits into your AI-driven software development environment.

  • At the OpenInfra Summit in Shanghai, Monty Taylor will demonstrate how long-lived AI coding and review agents collaborate through Gerrit, Zuul, and Matrix, integrating seamlessly into the same open development workflows used by human contributors.
